Obituary of Henry Anthony Wincek

Henry (Hank) Wincek, 92, of Plains Twp. died peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at the Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Plains Twp., where he had been a resident for the past 4 years. Hank was born on November 5, 1923, he was a son of Frank and Catherine Wincek. He was one of twelve children, and the last surviving. He attended Plains High School and then went to the cc camps. From there, Hank joined the U.S. Coast Guard. While stationed in Florida, he spring trained with the Yankees with such stars as Joe DiMaggio, and Johnny Mize. He also had the opportunity to steal a kiss from Betty Grable. Everyone loved his blue eyes. After his discharge he came back home to Plains and married the former Irene Sweda on March 29th, 1945, and they shared 50 years together. Hank began working as a custodian for SS. Peter and Paul School, Plains, and later went on to work for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District until his retirement in 1985. He loved all sports, especially baseball and football. In the off seasons, he would find some other sports to watch, from basketball to bowling, golf, hockey, etc. He is survived by his son Ronald (Melanie), and granddaughters Kendra (Jonathan) Harrison, Bria Wincek, and great granddaughter Nevaya Harrison. Hank's viewing will be on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 9:00 am at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Hudson Road, Plains until time of service. Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated at 10:00 am by Rev. Jack Lambert, Pastor. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Plains, with military honors. The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff of Timber Ridge for their exceptional care of Hank over the last four years.You took care of him like family and we appreciate it deeply, thank you.
