Catherine “Nana” Mackaravitz Bellas, born August 30, 1944, in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 20, 2026, surrounded by family.
Catherine was a person defined by generosity, a deep love for family and others, a candid sense of humor, and an easy way with people. She had an extraordinary ability to make friends with anyone and would strike up a conversation with just about anyone she met.
She shared that gift for connection through selling Avon and during her years working at the Social Security Administration, where her warmth, humor, and personality left lasting impressions.
She embraced life’s simple pleasures and routines. She loved the casino, Blue Moon beer, Dunkin’ decaf coffee, and meals at the Avenue Diner. She was a devoted fan of the New York Giants and enjoyed all sports. She found joy in bowling, watching soap operas, playing cards, and unapologetically sleeping whenever she could. These everyday joys were part of what made her so uniquely herself.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Rutkowski and Lewis Mackaravitz; her siblings Barbara and her husband David Gassner, Leonard “Bucko” Mackaravitz, Clement Mackaravitz and his wife Mary Jane, and Vincent Mackaravitz.
She is survived by her son, David Bellas and his wife Minna, and their children Alexandria and David Jr.; her daughter, Tracie Davis and her husband Jason, and their children Paige and Sean; as well as her nieces Denise Kuhn and Chris Martin, and her nephew Michael Mackaravitz.
The family extends sincere gratitude to hospice and her caregivers for their compassion and support during her final days.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation will be handled privately, with no services planned.
