Dorothy Ann Gardjulis, aged 82, of Plains Township, passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, surrounded by her loving family while in the care of the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.
Dorothy was born in Plains Township on April 18, 1943, a cherished daughter of the late John and Sophie Zaremba Condo. She attended Plains Area schools and graduated from Plains Memorial High School with the Class of 1961. During her high school years, she was a dedicated member of the school’s marching band, where she played the clarinet.
A chance encounter on a bus ride home from the Public Square led Dorothy to meet Joseph Gardjulis, who was returning home from work. This meeting blossomed into a lifelong partnership, and the two were married on November 13, 1965. After their wedding, Dorothy and Joseph briefly lived on Blackman Street in Wilkes-Barre before settling in their home in the Plains area, where they raised their children: Ann Marie, Linda, Donna and Joseph.
Dorothy was a devoted and hardworking woman who contributed greatly to supporting her family. She was employed at Pomeroy’s and Stroud’s, and worked in several local shoe factories, including Prestige Shoes, Frye Boot, and Carter Footwear. In later years, she also worked at Friendly’s and Dominick’s Café, eventually retiring from Sallie Mae.
Dorothy was known for her artistic and creative talents. She loved to crochet and took great joy in cooking and baking her family’s favorite meals, especially during the holidays. In retirement, she treasured caring for her grandchildren, making countless memories with them.
Her strength and determination in facing health challenges over the past few years inspired those around her. Dorothy was the matriarch of her family, lovingly referred to as Mom and Gram, and is now remembered as their guardian angel.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John and Sophie; her husband of twenty-eight years, Joseph; her daughter-in-law, Susan Gardjulis; and her brothers, Raymond Condo and infant brother John Condo.
She is survived by her daughters: Ann Marie Wheeler and her husband Michael, Linda Clemow and her husband Greg, and Donna Gardjulis; her son Joseph and his wife Lauren; her grandchildren Matthew Clemow, Ryan Gardjulis, and Sarah Wheeler; three great grandchildren; her sister Deborah Bonn and her husband Thomas; as well as several nieces and nephews. Her family and friends will forever celebrate and cherish her life.
Visitation for Dorothy will be held on Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains. The funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Deacon Donald Crane. Interment will follow at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Plains Township.
