Betty Janie Hine Obituary

Betty “Janie” Hine, 82, of Plains Township, passed peacefully into eternal rest on July 20, 2026, after a very recent and unexpected diagnosis of ovarian cancer. She spent her final moments in the compassionate care of the nurses and staff at Allied Services Hospice Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Born on July 17, 1944, Betty was one of four children of the late William J. and Stella Tomczak Frankiewicz of Wilkes-Barre. She attended St. Stanislaus Kostka School and graduated from James M. Coughlin High School. Shortly after graduating, Betty began working in a shoe factory, where she met the love of her life, Grantland Hine.

Betty and Grantland were married on June 30, 1962, and made their home in the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre. Together, they raised their two daughters, Laura and Lisa, and shared 58 devoted years of marriage.

Over the years, Betty worked in clothing factories, including Leslie Fay, where she put her sewing talents to use. Betty was a lifelong member of Parsons Primitive Methodist Church. In recent months, she was especially happy to be able to return to church services. When she was unable to attend, she remained connected to her faith by watching church services on television and reading the Our Daily Bread devotional. She never forgot to make sure each of her grandchildren received their copy, whether she mailed or hand delivered it. Her life was centered on faith and family. In her spare time, Betty found happiness in life’s simple pleasures, especially the time she spent with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bingo and looked forward each week to Wednesday games with her sister, Barb.

Betty was reunited with those she loved most; her beloved husband, Grantland Hine; her daughters, Laura L. Wychock and Lisa Zambetti; her son-in-law, Anthony Zambetti; her parents, William and Stella Frankiewicz; and her brothers, William Jr. and Robert “Bobby” Frankiewicz, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Elwood and Loretta Hine.

Those left to cherish Betty’s memory include her grandchildren, Jessica Timko and her husband, Andrew, of Yatesville; Erica Bezdziecki and her fiancé, Joseph Campbell, of Denver, Colorado; Julia Zambetti of New York; Adam Wychock of White Haven; and Jennifer Yost and her husband, Clayton, of Wapwallopen. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jaxton Zawatski, Avianna Timko, Grantland Timko, Gracelyn Timko, Reece Yost, and Otto Yost; her sister, Barbara Runscavage of Plains Township; and her son-in-law, Michael Wychock of White Haven; and many nieces and nephews.

Betty will be remembered for her unwavering faith, quick wit, loving heart, and the honesty that made her unmistakably herself. Whether sharing wisdom, a laugh, or a blunt opinion, she left a lasting impression on everyone who knew and loved her.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Sunday, July 26, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains.
