Mary Johnson, 73, of Plains Township, passed peacefully, on Thursday, September 22, 2022, while in the care of the Commonwealth Hospital Wilkes-Barre. Her loving family was by her side.
Born in Marion, South Carolina, on January 25, 1949, she was the last surviving of ten siblings. She was a daughter of Boyd and Louise Nelson Bethea. Mary grew up in Marion and attended Johnakin Middle School and was a graduate of Johnakin High School. Mary continued her education into college.
At this time is when she met and fell in love with her future husband, Wilbert Johnson. Together the new couple moved to Newark, New Jersey. Mary worked for St. Michael's Hospital as a dietary specialist for thirty years until her retirement. During this time, Mary and Wilbert, raised two sons Michael and Corey.
Mary enjoyed creating new meals for her family and friendly gatherings. She loved cooking. As her family grew, Mary enjoyed spending her time with her grandchildren and her niece and nephews. She had a strong faith and was a past member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Mary was preceded in passing by her loving parents: Boyd and Louise; husband Wilbert; sister Lillie Bethea Jarrott; sister Evelyn Bethea Goodyear; brother Joe Bethea; brother Levon Bethea; sister Dora Nelson Alexander; and brother Boyd Bethea Jr.
Surviving are her sons Michael, Plains Twp., Corey, Plains Twp., brother Bill Nelson,
Mullins, SC; brother Jerry Bethea, Myrtle Beach, SC, sister Pam Bethea, Marion, SC; grandchildren: Jeremy Johnson; Jeramiah Johnson; Quamire Burks; Nazah Royal; and Niyanna Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains. At 4:30 p.m. a celebration of Mary's life will begin.
