Please share a memory of Mary Ellen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Ellen B. Powell, 75, of the Hudson section of Plains, left her loving family behind on Monday, December 19, 2022, at Geisinger Medical Center in Plains Township. Mary Ellen will celebrate Christmas with her loving husband, David, in heaven this year and for eternity. Born in Wilkes-Barre on November 19, 1947, she was one of seven children of the late James V. and Catherine H. McAdara Casey. Mary Ellen was raised in the Larksville area and attended local schools, and was a graduate of St. Vincent High School, class of 1965-1966. She met and fell in love with her soul mate David James Powell, and the couple was happily married on June 7, 1969. The newlyweds moved to Kingston, where they raised their two sons: James and David. After their sons grew up and began their own families, the couple moved to Hudson, where they resided for the rest of their lives. Together David and Mary Ellen celebrated 50 years of marriage until David’s passing on September 8, 2019. Mary Ellen worked for RCA Mountaintop for a short time, but her favorite job was working for Little People Daycare School for over twenty years as an administrative assistant. This was her favorite time of the year, Christmas. You could find Mary Ellen watching the Hallmark Channel and all the Christmas stories. She looked forward to "baking" with her nieces, although many cookies weren't baked! She loved singing all her favorite songs, from Elvis to Journey, as she danced around, in her younger years! She enjoyed buying gifts from QVC for her family and spending time with her grandsons, Jimmy and Colby. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, and she will be missed and cherished by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, James and Catherine; husband, David; sisters, Kathleen Thomas and Margaret “Peggy” Ann Perfetto. Surviving are her sons Jim and his wife Jamy, Dallas; David and his wife Dorothy, Hudson; grandsons Jimmy and Colby; brothers James and his wife Georgia, Allentown; Thomas and his wife Linda, Kingston; Jack and his wife Michelle, Kingston; William and his wife Mary Lou, Whitehall; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations could be given to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 East Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, PA, 18702. This is where she got her precious cat Callie that was her companion these past few years. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at 9:30 a.m. from the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. in SS. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family in Hanover Green Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Monday evening, December 26th, at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Please wear something in the spirit of Christmas to her visitation since it was Mary Ellen's favorite time of the year.
