Obituary of Mary Frances O'Brien

Mary Frances O’Brien ,formerly of the Georgetown section of Wilkes-Barre Twp., passed away Friday, October 13, 2023, in the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born, November 23, 1964, Mary was the daughter of the late William and Helen Matrunich O’Brien. Being raised in Georgetown, Mary attended the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, and graduated from James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1982. Mary worked for a number of years at Jack Smith Lighting Inc. as a secretary and also Medico Industries, Plains Twp. Mary enjoyed being outside and tending to her garden. She would also can and pickle her harvest. Mary loved to be in the kitchen, baking pies, making perogies, and preparing her Christmas Eve Wigilia ( Polish) dinner for her friends and family (thanks to Gramma Bud’s recipes). We can not forget about her beloved chickens that she had. Mary lived many years in Plains and presently in Shickshinny. Mary is survived by the great joy of her life, her son, SGT Kevin O’Brien, wife, Kaylie and grandchildren, Sophia and Conor of Hawaii. She loved them more than life itself. They love her so much and will miss their Nana, greatly. Also surviving are her brothers, Stanley O’Brien, Scranton and Keith O’Brien, Wilkes-Barre; her sisters Kimberly McDermatt and her late husband, Patrick, Wilkes-Barre Twp.; niece Kristen Murray, nephews Jeffrey Murray, wife, Leah, and Dominick Marino. Aunt Gloria Matrunich and her companion, Dominic Paternioni, Shickshinny, along with his daughters, Brittany and Brianna and son Brandon; Kevin’s father, Joseph Grencavage, Wilkes-Barre Twp.,daughter Janelle Savage and late son, Joseph Jr.; great nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. Preceding Mary in death besides her parents are her brothers William, Michael, John, and Kevin O’Brien. As well as her sister, Deborah Mielewski. Mary, no words can describe how much we love you and miss you. We would like to give a big thanks to the staff at General Hospital ICU, Geisinger Danville ICU, and especially her nurse, Eliana at Danville. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 5:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Yanaitis Funeral Home inc, 55 Stark Street, Plains. Interment will be held privately at the family’s convenience.
