Obituary of Edward Washney

Edward Washney, 78, of Plains Township, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, in the Celtic Hospice Unit of Geisinger South Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.
Born on July 3, 1935, in Plains Township, he was a son to the late John and Anna Ozark Washney. Ed grew up in the Plains area and was a graduate of the Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1953. After graduation, Ed enlisted in the United States Army. He completed his basic training in Maryland and served tours in France and Greenland. He attained the rank of Specialist. After he was honorable discharged from his service, Ed moved to Philadelphia. He became a press operator for the Stone Container Company. Ed worked twenty five years until his retirement.
After his retirement, Ed returned to the valley in 1996. He enjoyed his time with a love of fishing, target shooting, and going to yard sales on the weekends. He loved to tinker with broken item he found at these yard sales and restore them. He was a handyman, a Mr. Fix-it. Overall, his pride and joy was being a grandfather and spending time with his grandchildren .
Ed was preceded in death by his brother Michael Washney.
He is survived by his son Edward and his wife Jennifer, Plains; sisters Dorothy Shubert and Lillian Mazuchowski, both of Philadelphia; grandchildren Phylicia and Edward; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains. Celebrant of the service will be Rev. John Boyle, Pastor. Interment will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hudson, with military honors provided by the United States Army. Friends and family may call at the church prior to Mass from 9:00a.m. till time of service.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accept at the church toward Ed's future grave marker.
