Obituary of Russell Derick Solovey Jr.
Please share a memory of Russell to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
A shocking loss has happened to the Solovey Family and to the community of Plains Township. Russell Derick Solovey Jr, Co-owner of the Plains Meat Market, was called home to the Lord early Saturday morning.
Born on November 5,1975, he was one of five children to Russell Sr. and Joyce Hresko Solovey. Russ grew up in the Plains area, attended local schools, and graduated from James M. Coughlin, class of 1992. Russ continued his education and went to auto mechanic trade school to pursue auto body repair. After a few semesters, Russ returned home to help with the family business.
He was a familiar face in Plains Township, if you didn’t know his name, you knew the taste of the family kielbasa and flavored meats that he helped his family make for many years. To Russell Senior, Russ Junior was his right hand man in the business. Together they won awards for their recipe at kielbasa festivals that became a staple on most dinner tables during the holiday seasons in Plains.
Russ loved his job. Everyday he would get up early to watch the sunrise. He would take care of the morning deliveries, stocking, getting the display cases ready, and then sit on the store stoop taking in the day waiting for the first customer.
Behind the counter Russ loved to create and experiment with new recipes. Recently, he invented a new jalapeno/ cheddar flavored kielbasa that turned out to be an instant success.
Outside of work Russ was a tinker, he loved to preserve the old and was excited for the new technological creations to come. He would spend time repairing old amplifiers, speakers, radios and returning them to their former glory. On the other hand he was always on the cutting edge of electronics. Russ loved to listen to music, but not just on the radio. He had a true passion for vinyl and boasted it was a better quality sound to those who knew him.
He was a passionate Eagles and Phillies fan, along with following the “number three” in Nascar.
Russell was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents George and Mary Solovey, and his maternal grandparents Nicholas and Helen Hresko ; and his aunt Joan Solovey.
Surviving are his parents Russell Sr. and Joyce, Plains; brothers Damian and his wife Erin Solovey Chiogna, Plains; and Daniel, Swoyersville; sisters Denise Kocher and her husband Neil, Mountaintop; Helene Hrichison and her husband Jonathan, Plains;nieces Kendell Kocher, Mountaintop; Katarina Solovey, Plains; and Eliana Hrichison;Plains;nephews Cory Solovey, Oregon; Devin Solovey, Indiana; and Dr. Neil Kocher, Hershey; companion Melissa Bednar, Plains; uncle Eugene Solovey and his wife Susan, Mountaintop; aunts Gloria Brzycki, Ohio, Sharon Hresko, Plains; and Russ’s four fur babies (his cats).
