Helen Marie Castellani, 90, of the Hudson Section of Plains, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, in the General Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, following a brief illness.
Born on May 4, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Michael A. , and Antoinette Krett Kucek. Helen grew up in the Irishtown section of Plains Township. She attended local schools and was a proud graduate of Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1940. During World War II, Helen worked for the JB Carr Company, of Wilkes-Barre, helping to make meal rations for soldiers overseas. After the war, Helen began to work in the local garment industry. She was employed by Plains Blouse, and later by Bob Ellen's Sportswear, as a garment worker until her retirement. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the I.L.G. W. U, and the Senior Citizens Group, Plains. Throughout the years, Helen enjoyed helping and planning her high school class reunions.
Mrs. Castellani was well known for her skill and talent in designing and painting pysanki eggs at Easter. Helen's other hobbies were being an avid shopper and a wonderful cook for her family. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Louis, 1985; brothers John, Frank, and Michael; sisters Lottie Bohunko, Mary Doblix, Stella Mazur, and Blanche Swan.
Surviving are daughters Beverly and her husband Robert Astolfi, Forty-Fort, Lou Ellen and her husband Raymond Zekas, Shavertown; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, May 3, at 10:00 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains. Interment will be held in Italian Independent Cemetery, Wyoming. Friends and family may call at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Helen's Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road, Plains, Pa, 18705.
