Obituary of Mary Florence Matzel

Mary F.( Zapotoczny) Matzel, 94 , of Wilkes-Barre, was a beautiful woman, like a beautiful rose, she was picked by the Lord, the world's gardener, on March 29, 2014, to be placed in his kingdom. Born in Bethlehem, December 15, 1919, she was the daughter to the late Karol and Tekla Daniecka Zapotoczny. In her childhood, her family relocated to the Wyoming Valley. Mary attended local school and was a graduate of James M. Coughlin high school, class of 1937. In 1941, she married Adam Matzel, just before he left for the war. Upon his returning home, Mary became a homemaker caring for their six children. Mary and Adam had a beautiful life raising their children and watching their families grow. Mary lost Adam on September 26,1998. Together they celebrated 57 years of marriage. Throughout her children's life , Mary was involved in the St. John Evangelis school PTA, were she was an officer; the North End Little League Association, where she helped with the annual bingo; and she was a cub scout den mother for the local boy scout group. Mary's hobbies were spending time in her garden growing vegetables, plants, and her peach trees. She loved to watch jeopardy and answering all the questions; she enjoyed scrabble and cryptograms and playing pinochle with her family . In her later years, she loved to spend time sharing her wisdom and guidance with her grandchildren. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Adam; daughter Carole McCoy; and brother Anthony Zapotoczny. Mary is survived by her son Robert and his wife Gail, Harvey's Lake;daughter Geri Matzel Langdon, Plains; son Richard and his wife Kathleen, Friendship, MD; daughter June Januszko, Dupont; daughter Evelyn Matzel, Pittston;brother Stanley Zapotoczny, Wilkes-Barre;sister Stephanie Sepela, Wilkes-Barre; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated this Saturday, April 5, 2014, at the 10:30 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Kostka worship site of St. Andre Bessette Parish, 668 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. Family and friends many call at the church from 9:30 a.m until time of service.Internment will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Plains. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family for the future care of Mary's daughter Evelyn, who is disabled. The family would like to thank Celtic Home Care and Celtic Hospice for the loving care they provided their mother. Mary's arrangements are in the care of the Yanaitis Funeral Home, Inc., Plains.
